Airfare Search Buzz on Yahoo Answers

Airfare Questions and Answers

I enjoy reading all of the comments I receive here on Airfare-Now.com, but occasionally I like to pop over to the Yahoo Answers website to see what their current buzz on the subject is. I'll usually do an advanced search for either "airfare" or "airfare deals"- looking specifically for posts that are less than 7 days old and still open. Under the term "airfare", today's search was pretty lucrative with more than two pages of airfare search hits.

One member wrote,
"Q. Is is possible for airfare to go lower in two days? Airfare to JFK for Saturday just rocketed, so I'm wondering... is it possible that the price may change between today and Saturday? At the last minute my friend decided to go with us, but the price is a little over $600. Thanks."
This question titled "Is is possible for airfare to go lower in two days?" was posted on Thursday, December 17th so the Saturday the writer was referring to has come and gone. There were 7 answers submitted by readers and the top answer has not yet been selected.

The answers that were submitted by readers were mixed with several saying that airfare will do nothing but rise until departure and several saying a last minute airfare deal may by looming on the horizon. One responder gave a tip about buying airfare 10-12 months in advance which I found to be a little... uh.. unpractical, and one responder said airfare can go up or down every two seconds which I found to be a little... uh.. extreme.

While I suppose it is a crap-shoot in many ways when it comes to a question like this, none of the responders took into account the fact that this is the weekend before the most celebrated holiday in North America. The airfare demand during the holiday season is at an all-time high and the supply of available airfare is always quite fixed. This year in fact, the supply of available airfare was reduced by a major snowstorm that crippled airports all over the Eastern USA.

The only airfare deal that the original poster can hope for during the busy holiday season will come on Christmas Day itself. Travel before or after that date will be expensive and the airfare will not go down - of course, this is just my opinion :)

Happy Holidays!

My Flight Was Canceled.. Now What??

Weather Related Cancellations

With the brutal snowstorm that many of our readers are enduring in the Eastern US, we thought it might be helpful to deviate from our normal articles on discount airfare, airfare coupons, cheap flights, etc. and instead blog about flight cancellation procedures. While most travelers have endured a flight delay or two during their lifetime, not many have experienced their worst nightmare, a weather related flight cancellation during the holiday season. Hopefully, this information will help you get through this insurmountable inconvenience with little or no emotional scaring.

Remain Calm

The most important thing to do is remain calm. While your travel woes are hugely inconvenient, there are thousands of other would-be passengers in the exact same boat as you. Weather related cancellations are not the fault of the ticket agent, so getting angry and making demands will simply lessen your chances of getting any satisfaction from the airline. Although not as frequently as a few years ago, stranded passengers who have been polite when dealing with the airline's ticket agent have even received a little "inconvenience compensation." To find out if your particular carrier offers this benefit, simply ask the agent. If the answer is “yes” the compensation usually comes in the form of a food voucher - and food can be soothing during difficult times.

In Person

Even though the lines are long, we recommend speaking with the ticket agent in person rather than calling the airline so that you can request a flight on a competing carrier. While all flights will be booked up very quickly by stranded passengers, having the ticket agent transfer your ticket electronically to another flight or another carrier is the way to go. You will have a new boarding pass in hand and you will be less likely to get bumped from the new flight due to overbooking. You can even bring a list of other airline schedules and flight numbers with you to assist the agent. But remember, the more polite and courteous you are to the agent, the more polite and courteous they will be to you.

Luggage

If you're able to get booked on another flight, you'll need to make sure you know where your luggage is and how it will get to you. It's important to plan your luggage transfer with the agent and not leave this to chance. If you don’t make arrangements for your luggage, you could find yourself spending your travel money on new clothes. Hopefully, you have followed our previous advice and have one outfit in your carry-on luggage.

Contact Info

When rescheduling your flight always give the airline your mobile telephone number. Most commercial airlines will attempt to contact passengers if there are additional changes, delays, or flight cancellations.

Considering Airfare to Italy?

Get More than Airfare... Get the Package!

Italy is just an amazing country, filled with such rich history, gorgeous lakes, spectacular mountains, and picturesque cities. Rome, Venice and Milan are the most frequently visited cities of Italy, but there is so much more to take in here including the breathtaking islands of Sicily and Sardinia.

Rather than booking airfare only like we recommend for domestic travel, you'll find that you get the very best travel deal to Italy by booking an italy tour package. And if you heed our advice, there is no better travel deal anywhere then the one you'll get from the 15-day "Unforgettable Italy" tour that's offered by Grand European Tours.

A quick airfare only search of JFK to Rome shows the airfare running in the $1,000 - $1,600 on Kayak. Start adding hotels, transportation, and attractions and you'll soon be in the upper thousands. Whoa!

Grand Europeans tour of italy on the other hand is way less than $3,000 and is nearly all-inclusive. Their tour includes round trip airfare, local expert guides (Rome, Pompeii, Capri, Florence and Venice), transportation, first class hotels, travel documents, 16 meals, and a professional tour director.

According to GE Tours website, you'll
"Spend your first 3 days immersed in the art and history of Rome. See the fascinating remains of Pompeii, share a meal with a Sorrento family and visit the Isle of Capri. Discover the treasures of the Uffizi Gallery with a Florentine art expert."
There are so many essential locations and sights to visit, but not planning the perfect itinerary will likely mean missing out on visiting some great places. A reliable Italy tour organizes the trip in such a way that all important and interesting locations are covered.

Airfare-now recommends that you skip the airfare-only option and visit the Grand European Tours website to learn more about their Italy tour. Have a wonderful trip to the land of pizza, pasta and vino!

What are Airfare Aggregators?

Airfare Aggregators

A new breed of travel websites called aggregator sites has cropped up lately. Basically a travel search engine, websites like Kayak, Mobissimo, and SideStep search a whole flock of search engines as well as airline sites themselves. Why go the extra step? Many of the budget airlines that have great inexpensive fares, like Southwest, don’t do business with consolidators like Travelocity, so by searching only those sites, you’re missing half the market. Our favorite is Mobissimo, which on multiple comparisons brought up the lowest fares most quickly.

Airfare aggregators are handy tools that pack a lot of travel search engine punch. Rather than trying to find travel search engine sites and then leaping from one to another, use an aggregator, like Kayak, to search for discount airfare, hotel, car, packages and even cruise prices.

These are sites that claim to pull flight data from hundreds of airfare websites at the time of your search – which gives them an advantage when finding the lowest priced flights over sites that book directly with the airline. It’s a business model that is supported by affiliate links, AdSense ads, and direct ad buys. A few test runs of these sites resulted in the lowest price being from a direct booking site (referenced below), matched by the airline’s site itself.

    Tips When Booking Holiday Airfare

    Finding Cheap Flights

Purchasing discount airfare online has become fairly commonplace because the process is so cheap, so easy, and so convenient. To assure the best airfare discounts when booking online over the holidays, airfare-now suggests following these simple strategies:

Use a Good Online Ticketing Agency

Look at any round trip airfare on the three major travel websites (Travelocity, Hotwire, and Priceline), and you'll quickly notice some pretty extreme fluctuations in the price. While purchasing from one of the big three may be tempting, you're better off in almost every circumstance to search for your airfare using Kayak.com. Why? Because Kayak is not actually the ticket seller. Kayak simply collects the airfare data from the airlines directly and then refers you to that airline to complete the purchase. If Kayak finds you a good fare on United, for example, you will complete the purchase from United rather than Kayak. This tip can save you LOTS of green!

    Book Airfare Early

You've heard the old saying "the early bird catches the worm"?  When it comes to finding airfare deals, the early bird catches the "world" and is almost always safer and luckier at finding affordable rates. While airfare deals can pop up at any time, your chances of getting the cheapest flights are best when you make a 6-8 week advance booking.

    Try Qualifying for Discounts

The online ticketing agencies will occasionally have reduced airfare options for military personnel, senior citizens and college students. Before booking your flight, see if you fall into any of the above categories and inquire about a cheaper ticket. Call the airlines directly too!

    Plan Your Dates and Time

While flying during your normal sleeping hours may be a little less appealing than flying in the morning, this type of concession will usually net you a very nice airfare discount. Try plying with the dates and times to test this strategy and you'll be a believer very quickly. Late evening flights and weekday flights are almost always cheaper than prime time and weekend flights.Oh, and the day before or after a major holiday is the worst day to pick!

Package Deals Can Save You Plenty

Booking your flight in a travel package with hotel and rental car is usually a very wise thing to do. Compare the costs of each item separately and and you'll see that this is true in nearly every case. The Kayak.com search engine is super for this as well because it will offer you the option of adding a hotel or car when taking you to the airfare page. It's pretty slick!

    New York City Travel

Early Spring is a great time to visit New York City. If you really want to get to know the city you should go on one of the food tours nyc that are offered by Bruce Scher. He'll take you out for a terrific dinner and show you all of the must-see landmarks.

I hope you're able to get where you're going a little cheaper by using these tips!

Holiday Airfare Deals to Northeastern United States

Massachusetts, New England, and New Hampshire

If you're like most of my readers, you are probably busy booking airfare and making your final travel plans for the upcoming holiday season. And if you're looking for airfare deals over the holidays, you're actually in luck because the number of expected air travelers this season is projected to be way down.

Where are best airfare deals for the holidays?

Interestingly enough, the cheapest holiday flights are bound for the Northeast USA with the absolute best airfare deals to Massachusetts, New England, and New Hampshire. A quick scan of Kayak is showing some Los Angeles to Manchester airfare running at less than $100 - hoping you can take advantage of some of the best deals I have seen in ages.

    Holiday Airfare to Hawaii

    Holiday Bargains

With the advent of the internet, it's much easier to find holiday bargains these days.

Find the right website, type in the appropriate search term or search phrase (e.g. airfare to Hawaii, birthday gift for boyfriend, or vacation package in Peru) and BOOM... there will be more deals than you'll ever have time to click through.

    Airfare to Hawaii

Let's take that airfare to Hawaii example. In Hawaii, the low vacation season starts in the late fall and you'll find plenty of bargains around that time by searching the Internet for "Hawaii airfare deals". Most of the travel websites now bundle their airfare deals with a hotel and car too which makes those deals even more spectacular. That means my best friend Malena from the mainland can come to visit me right now and her flight will be cheaper than the one she's looking at for spring break!

    Christmas Gift Ideas

Only 11 More Days Until Christmas

With the Christmas season drawing near, I'm wondering if my airfare-now readers have finished their remaining gift purchases?

For me, getting a travel gift certificate for airfare or a hotel is always nice but I'm still a traditional girl and would much rather receive something a little more tangible under the tree. I always get travel related gifts because that's my thing, but I usually end up receiving an electronic gadget or two and lots of clothing as well. Clothing makes me super happy!

I'm still needing a Christmas gift for my dad and was thinking about getting him a new watch to wear at work. Right now, he doesn't even wear a watch at all. He just opens his cell phone up to check the time but that can be a little inconvenient and a little rude when he's with a client.

Dad is a businessman here on the island and he needs something nice to wear when he dresses up for work. While searching the internet, I found a new website called bluedial.com that has some beautiful watches that would look terrific on him. I haven't made up my mind yet, but I was looking at purchasing from the movado series 800 style watches on their website. They're all pretty, but I love the one in the upper right corner with the blue face.

    What do you think?

    Used Handicap Vans

    Guest Post By: Carl K.

When your current vehicle just isn't cutting it anymore, but the current economy has put a damper on your bank account, a wise decision is to browse a selection of used cars. A country-wide selection of used vehicles are not limited to just regular cars, trucks, and SUVs. Used handicap vans and wheelchair accessible vans are available as well. A nice vehicle geared for a handicap individual doesn't have to be new and expensive; used handicap vans navigate the roads with just as much ease and can be found all over.

Used handicap vans are available with many different modifications, such as wheelchair ramps and lifts, lowered floors, hand controls, and various other helpful aids for the disabled. If you require different modifications than your used van is already fitted with, it is likely that the dealership selling the van will be able to assist you in purchasing additional conversions. You will also be able to find various used handicap vans in different brands, styles, and colors. Toyota, Chrysler, and Honda all offer chassis for handicap vans in various colors, so make sure to choose a look for your van that you will enjoy. You can also choose between a minivan and a full-size van.

Perhaps the largest drawback to purchasing a used van is the absence of the seven year, 70,000 mile conversion warranty usually attached to brand new vans. For some, however, this may be a small price to pay compared to the price cuts that go along with purchasing a used vehicle. A physical handicap may have numerous additional expenses attached to it, but the price of mobility does not have to be unreasonable.

Can I Get a Deal With Last Minute Airfare?

Does Purchasing Last Minute Airfare Ever Make Sense?

    Q. Does booking last minute airfare ever work out? In other words, can I ever get a better deal by booking last minute airfare rather than advance booking my flight?

    A. Airfare has risen steadily in 2009 and is more expensive than ever before. For this reason travelers are looking for any opportunity to get the edge on their airfare prices. While last minute flights do offer an occasional savings opportunity, that is really the exception not the norm.

Last minute flight supply is extremely slim so your best bet is to purchase your airfare in advance.

    Caution... Airfare Search Engine Ahead

    Sorting Out Airfare Searches

All airfare search engines are not created equal but they do have something in common. Here's a reminder that I just read about on the Travel Articles website that bears repeating.

When viewing the airfare search engine results screen, you'll need to do a little scrolling and/or sorting to find the savings. By scrolling down to the bottom of the list, you'll see that airfare search results are often listed in the order of fastest travel time rather than cheapest airfare. Selecting a flight from the bottom of the list, or even better resorting the list can save you hundreds of dollars.

    Finding Airfare Deals to Australia

    Planning a Trip Down Under?

If you're planning a trip Down Under, you will most likely benefit from these 4 handy tips for finding cheap airfare to Australia:

    1. Find out which airlines use airports in Australia as their hub. Qantas and Virgin Blue are airline giants with hubs at the Sydney Airport, but there are many more to chose from as well.

    2. Schedule your Australia flights for midweek. Scheduling your flights for Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays can save you lots of money on airfare to Australia.

    3. Visit Australia during the low season. Airfare has a high season price and a low season price, and it's important to note that Australia is in the southern hemisphere so its seasons are opposite of most of the rest of the world’s population. In general, you'll find the lowest airfare to Australia during their winter.

    4. Try flying into a different city. Australia has two major international airports (Sydney and Melbourne), so try both airports when making your air travel plans.

If you need more information, there are tons of Australia and New Zealand Articles available on articlealley.com. In addition to blog posts and news release on the culture Down Under, there are traveler’s stories about Australia, detailed tips for finding airfare deals, even Australia Travel Guides.
